In media the stereotypical mathematician is somewhat excentric. But sometimes reality is more extreme than fiction. This is certainly the case of John Nash. Nash was a brilliant mathematician whose works in game theory, differential geometry and partial differential equations changed our ways to view market economics, computing, artificial intelligence, military, evolutionary biology and many more. Nash was awarded with a shared Nobel Price in Economic Sciences in 1994. But John Nash accomplished this while suffering from schizophrenia, extreme paranoia and delusions. Nash was made famous by the movie A Beautiful Mind wich is based on his life.
Stealing A Nation is a 2004 incredible award-winning documentary made by John Pilger. Pilger tells the story about the Chagos islands in the indian ocean. In the 60s and 70s the British goverments with help from American officals expelled the entire population from the islands. The plan was to give away the island to the U.S.A. who wanted to use it as a military base. The people who lived in the Chagos Islands, had to move in to the slums of Mauritius where they live in poverty. This documentary shows that behind the scenes even democratic goverments can commit horrific crimes against humanity
Death Of A Nation tells how Russia has changed since the fall of communism. After the Soviet Union collapsed, the life expectancy has dropped, every other newborn baby is diagnosed with a disease at birth. In the first half of 2005 the population dropped by half a million and the WHO estimates that in 2020 over a million persons will have died of AIDS in Russia. In moscow however the situation is different, the city has more billionaires than any other city in the world. Was the free market really such a huge victory for the russian people, or was the USSR socialism actually better for the people, despite the lack of freedom?
The Wobblies or the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) was an international union founded in 1905. They believed that all workers should be united as a class and that the wage system should be removed. At it's peak it had about 100'000 members. They did however meet violent resistance from the U.S. goverment.

Media being extremely important in a democracy, it is extremely important that it gives a correct image of the world. If the media is not trying to provide the truth, democracy is severely damaged. The film tells the story of Murdoch's global media enterprise. Greenwald claims that FOX is not politically independent, but strongly conservative.

The Genius of Charles Darwin is a television documentary written by and presented by famous atheist Richard Dawkins. It is divided into three parts; Life, Darwin & Everything, The Fifth Ape and God Strikes Back. In the first part Dawkins explains the basics of natural selection and tells the story of Charles Darwin. He also travels to Nairobi where he interviews a prostitute that has genetic resistance to HIV. In the second part it gets a bit more philosophical. He meets evolutionary psychologists who explains how morals can develop without religion. Dawkins also takes up the controversial subjects of social Darwinism and eugenics. In the last and third part the focus is on the resistance Darwins' ideas have met. The Genius of Charles Darwin won the Best TV Documentary Series 2008 at the British Broadcast awards.

According to Curtis, Freud's theories have been used in public relations and politics to manipulate people. If you are into both politics and psychology this is a must see, if not it might still be interesting to see how people are trying to manipulate you.
